IDSFFK 2015: Films on Different Forms of Power and Control to Dominate Day Four

The fourth day of International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala features a total of 52 films across 8 categories, dealing with different forms of power relations (Individual, Cultural and Institutional) and how ordinary individuals are affected by them.
‘Citizenfour’- a real life thriller based on a series of interviews conducted by film maker Laura Poitras and Journalist Glenn Greenwald on N.S.A whistle blower Edward Snowden. Citizen four was screened in many film festivals and won awards including the British Film Academy awards 2014.
“Fest of Duty”, a 60 min documentary by Iranian filmmaker Firouzeh Khosrovani, introduces a religious ceremony designed to instill Islamic beliefs and values in girls when they reach the age of nine. The film follows two adolescent cousins as they change into adulthood, eight years after the ceremony.
National award winning film maker Sanju Surendran’s, ‘Garass’ is an exploration on the urban existence of youth lost in the worlds of hallucinations,memories ,poetry and arguments . The film is screened under short fiction category.
‘A Documentary proposal’ by R .V. Ramani, a Jury member of the ongoing IDSFFK , features a journey to the house of legendary film maker Mrinal Sen by officials from Films Division to propose the making of a documentary on Sen under its banner. The film is screened in Jury films section.
 ‘KAKUMA: A land of tears and hope’ is short documentary by Fr. Jiji Kalavanal from the competition section. The film depicts the life of refugees in Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya.

Ramanathan Vaidyanathan’s ‘Earth Shit (Kalivu)’, is a short documentary in competition section, which focuses on the social, environmental and livelihood impact of coal and petroleum based projects in the Cauvery delta of Tamil Nadu. The film also details the political and economic backgrounds of such projects.
